Sweet iron is a unique metal designed to encourage salivation acceptance of the bit.
As the metal oxidises it produces a sweet taste - something most horses take kindly to - and this promotes relaxation in the mouth and acceptance of the bit.
The Sweet Iron Three Ring Dutch Gag uses a lever action which raises the bit in the horse's mouth this helps the rider to maintain control of the horse. Poll pressure is also applied when the reins are placed on the lower ring. When using the Dutch Gag two reins may be used. One on the main snaffle ring of the bit and either of the other lower rings.
